July 1871 match vs South Yarra

Saturday 22 July - Richmond Paddock
Crowd: 400-500

Melbourne 2
South Yarra 0

Melbourne win by 2 goals

Goalkickers: Austin Loughnan 1, Charles Carr 1

South Yarra went into the game with a distinct size and weight advantage, and as such played with tactics designed to help them avoid charging at the Melbourne players. They surprised the home side early but were wasteful with their chances.

Melbourne eventually regrouped and were led forward by their followers, and as South tired they eventually cracked. Austin Loughnan got the first after an assist from James Byrne and Carr the second not long after the sides changed ends for the new half.

The home team pressed hard for a third but South Yarra put in an all-out defensive effort to keep them at bay and they managed to restrict the damage to two goals.

Ernest Harrison, James Byrne and Duff were best.
