Baker debuted with South Melbourne in 1867, then played for Emerald Hill in 1868 and Albert Park between 1869 and 1871 before joining Carlton. He rejoined Albert Park in 1873 and played there through 1875.
He retired at the end of 1880 but reappeared in 1881.
