A cricketer with Northcote and a member of the Victorian state team as well as a promising footballer, Lugton joined the Fuschias late in 1912 and debuted in the first round of 1913, making an immediate impact playing on the half-back line.
He played every game in his two years of league football before enlisting in the army on March 23, 1915 - the 447th Australian to sign up for the conflict.
Putting his cricket skills to good use in the conflict Lugton was enlisted as a grenade thrower at Gallipoli. In his time at the front he suffered a shell attack which buried him under rubble for six hours, and had a sniper's bullet come so close it should the bolt on his rifle.
Lugton was killed in service near Villiers-Bretonneux, France just under three months after leaving Australia. Lugton Street in Alphington, Victoria is name in honour of Frank and his brother John who also died in the conflict.
