Brother of Corrie and Mark, Gardner was a forward and wingman who missed out on the 1900 Premiership side when he was omitted after the winning Semi Final.

He also played for the Trinity College team at the University of Melbourne from 1900, winning a premiership with the side in 1902.

Gardner retired from football at the end of 1903 and sailed for America and England to pursue his career in electrical engineering. He died at just 24 years of age while visiting Sweden in 1905.
