A track athlete who competed internationally, Besanko was an Under 19s player in 1973 before suffering a broken collarbone in August. He was also a reserves player in 1977 and 1978, wearing number 45 and wearing number 53 respectively. He left the club in April 1979 and joined Essendon where he played three games as an amateur during 1980.

Became captain-coach of Dingley in 1983 for one season before rejoining Essendon as a specialist coach in 1984. He took over as captain-coach at Rye in 1986 and stayed there for two seasons before being appointed Fitness Coach at St Kilda in 1988.

His brother Neil also played for Essendon and St Kilda.
