Career Statistics
A track athlete who competed internationally, Besanko was an Under 19s player in 1973 before suffering a broken collarbone in August. He was also a reserves player from 1977 to 1980, wearing number 45 and wearing number 53 respectively. He was dropped from the senior list in the 1979 pre-season, playing on in the Reserves until early 1980 when he left to join Essendon.
Within a few weeks at his new club he played his first senior game. Remaining an amateur due to his athletic commitments, Besanko appeared in three league games that year.
Became captain-coach of Dingley in 1983 for one season before rejoining Essendon as a specialist coach in 1984. He joined Sandringham in 1985 and took over as captain-coach at Rye in 1986 and stayed there for two seasons before being appointed Fitness Coach at St Kilda in 1988.
His brother Neil also played for Essendon and St Kilda. Barry later worked as a fitness adviser with the Saints.
