August 1894 Match vs Footscray

Saturday 11 August - MCG

Melbourne 3.1, 7.5, 8.7, 9.9
Footscray 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 5.1

Melbourne win by 4 goals

Goalkickers: Christy 5, Hogan 1, Roche 1, Smith 1, McGinis 1

An eighth straight win for the Reds kept their premiership window slightly ajar, as they set up a do-or-die match against Essendon the following Saturday with their season on the line.

Melbourne were missing key players O'Dea, Sholl and Moysey but it didn't impact them in a major way as they continued their great form. The key to domination was the rucks, where Footscray were found wanting.

A two goal lead at half time could have been more, but Footscray managed to score two majors from the only two chances they had. On the other side David Christy had bagged five.

An improved performance in the second half got Footscray back into the game, but they were too far behind. They threatened briefly but couldn't get close.

Best were Christy, McGinis and Fry.
