August 1891 match vs Fitzroy

Saturday 29 August - Fitzroy Cricket Ground
Crowd: 15,000 - 20,000

Fitzroy 1.0, 3.2, 4.3, 4.5
Melbourne 1.1, 1.2, 2.2, 4.4

Match drawn

Goalkickers: Smith 1, McKenzie 1, Kelly 1, Christy 1

A dry and fast ground with little wind contributed to a high standard game, and Melbourne scored first through Smith - who was in a battle with Fitzroy's Grace to be the leading scorer in the VFA.

The locals were handicapped at first by their insistence on trying to get the ball to their top scorer at any cost, but he eventually levelled the scores and by half time his side had opened up a 3-1 lead.

Melbourne struck back immediately after the restart, goalling through McKenzie but it wasn't long before Fitzroy had a fourth on the board. The locals had the the lead at the last change, but Melbourne were on top in the last quarter and got two more goals. They had the Roys on the run in the dying minutes but Smith spurned a golden chance and the match finished level.

Best were Aitken, McKenzie and Fry.
