Against the Bulldogs on their future second home ground, Melbourne got off to a fast start when they kicked two goals to nil into the wind in the first quarter and then six to one in the second to take a commanding lead.
They further extended the lead in the third term to over 50 points before the Bulldogs kicked the last three goals of the quarter. With the use of the breeze in the final term Melbourne should have held on to win comfortably but conceded five goals to one and only just held on for their first win of the year.
Best were Kennedy-Harris, Garlett and N. Jones. vandenBerg was replaced by Watts at half time after suffering a cut head and Michie replaced Hogan at three-quarter time.
