The Bombers kicked the first two goals of the game before the Demons responded with the next three, but from then on Essendon dominated nearly the whole first quarter. Only late goals, including a nine pointer to Addam Maric kept Melbourne in the game.
Despite being outplayed for most of the night the margin was just ten points at the last change after another burst by Melbourne, but the last term was all Essendon and they romped away to a comfortable win to advance to the Semi Final.
