VFL Park was plunged into darkness for ten minutes during the curtain raiser between Geelong College and Moorabbin Technical College when a technician accidentally knocked out a plug which was operating the ground's $1 million lighting system.

With the curtain raiser cut short the Demons and Carlton began their match on time, playing for a guaranteed $25,000 prize money for making the Night Series Semi-Final.

The lead changed six times in the second half before the Blues ran away with victory. Melbourne were in front in the last quarter until Barry Norsworthy turned the ball over to Robert Walls for a Blues goal. A second blunder by Norsworthy gave away a free kick which allowed young ruckman Jim Canfield to kick another goal.

Best were Coles, Hardeman and Hamilton
