Melbourne win by 49 points

The two sides travelled to Sydney during a split round to play an exhibition match with $1000 on offer from sponsors Ampol for the winners. The Demon committee announced that their side, sitting 11th only on percentage, would share the winnings entirely amongst players if they won the match but it still look like a tough task against the fourth placed Magpies.

In heavy cross winds during the first quarter it looked like the financial tonic was all the Demons needed, slamming on eight goals to nil to all but ruin the contest. They had four of their goals in the first six minutes of the term. The margin was 60 points after a Colcott goal early in the second term before the Magpies finally got one of their own. The Sydney crowd would have been forgiven for thinking that the talk about the Pies being red hot favourites had been some sort of mistake.

A Collingwood committeeman claimed that they'd have "eaten" the Demons with a ten goal start had four premiership points been on the line, but to the Melbourne players sharing in the $1000 prize for winning it was a welcome relief from their horror season.

Best were Colcott, Campbell and Townsend.
