Having plummeted to 11th after four losses in a row after being early pacesetters, the Demons needed to get back on track at the Western Oval and a win over the struggling Lions was the first step towards climbing back into the eight.
Kicking with a fierce breeze the Roys - who had lost by 104 points the previous week - opened up a 22 point lead at quarter time but found themselves behind at the half. They failed to take advantage of their turn to kick with the wind in the third - being kept at bay by a strong defensive performance by Graeme Yeats and Sean Wight.
Melbourne then stormed home in the last, with Andy Lovell kicking three of seven goals in the last quarter to compliment the five booted by Allen Jakovich throughout the day.
Best were Wight, B. Lovett and Charles. Jim Stynes hurt his ankle, Sean Wight his hip and Jason Norrish his hamstring.
