Richmond dominated for the first seven minutes of the opening quarter, but from there Melbourne charged away to their second best first quarter under Dean Bailey.
They extended the lead at half time, and despite letting Richmond back into the match with terrible kicking for goal in the third quarter a Jack Watts goal on the bell gave them a big enough lead to hold onto to and nudge back into the top eight.
Cale Morton replaced Joel Macdonald in the third quarter.
Watts, Moloney and McKenzie were Melbourne's best.
