After three straight losses which had derailed their five match unbeaten start the Demons finally got back in the winner's circle with an easy victory. On a day perfect for football, with no rain and a firm ground, St Kilda booted their lowest score against Melbourne in 37 years, and suffered their biggest loss to the Demons in 39.

Despite not scoring in the first quarter, a deficit of 23 points was not insurmountable but without Tony Lockett (suspended) and Stewart Loewe (injured) the Saints were unable to kick any sort of respectable score. They kicked two goals early in the second quarter but then didn't get another one until 11 minutes into the last.

The Demons were led by a dominant David Schwarz performance, he kicked 3.5 and took 16 marks. Eight of his marks came in the first quarter as his side was opening up a 23 point lead. St Kilda got a goal in two goals in the second quarter, but the Saint forwards didn't manage another one until the 11 minute mark of the final term.

Best were Schwarz, Lyon and Tingay. Todd Viney suffered a corked thigh, Steven Febey a rib injury and Kevin Dyson a hamstring injury.
