A ruckman promoted from the Fourths as a 15-year-old, Johnston was was best and Fairest for the Third Eighteen in 1961. He won the Morrish Medal, played for the Victorian Under 19s and toured America with the Demons in 1963.

Failing to kick start a VFL career, Johnston moved to Box Hill in 1964, then Queensland in 1965, where he played in Morningside's first QAFL premiership. He played for Queensland, won the Grogan Medal for best in the competition and was named in the Morningside team of the century.

Johnston is a member of the Queensland AFL Hall of Fame.

Before the 1957 Grand Final, Johnston's mother decorated the Melbourne committee room with flowers. He was promoted the next year.
