September 1883 match vs Geelong

Saturday 15 September - Corio Oval
Crowd: 2000-4000

Geelong 5.23
Melbourne 0.6 (half time 1.16-0.5)

Geelong win by 5 goals

Melbourne travelled to Geelong with a draw and a loss from their two clashes against the country side but suffered a significant defeat. The damage could have been a lot worse, with the home kicking 16 behinds in the first half and 21 in total.

The start of the match was held up by Melbourne complaining about Geelong's umpire and would only play under Essendon's Paddy McShane. The controversy only served to delay the thrashing.

The visitors only had a short period of dominance in the first half where they attacked the Geelong goal, and they missed a very easy chance on goal, but they were being kept in the game by the home side's poor conversion.

Geelong's scoring rate was better in the second half and they ran away to a simple win. Melbourne added just one more behind for the game.

Murdoch McKenzie, McIntyre and Plant were best.
