September 1881 match vs South Melbourne

Saturday 24 September - South Melbourne

Melbourne 0.5
South Melbourne 5.15 (half time 0.2-2.4)

South Melbourne win by 5 goals

Played in front of a 'large' crowd, Melbourne were thrashed on their visit to the South Melbourne Cricket Ground. They got the first behind of the match, but without Watson and Stiffe in their side that was about as good as it got for them.

South got the only two goals of the first half, and when the wind swung around in Melbourne's favour in the second half they were every chance of causing an upset . The wind didn't help them as South ran riot with three more goals. Melbourne had several opportunities to register a major but couldn't get the ball between the sticks.

There was an incident during the game where South's McMichael was thrown against the fence and retaliated by throwing earth or sand in the face of Charles Power. Power responded by punching him.
