Career Statistics

Played three practice matches for the Demons in 1949 and each time was cut by selectors. After the first two games he was rescued by Secretary Alex Gray but finally after they crossed his name out the third time Gray relented and let him leave.

Simmonds returned to the country but came back to the VFL a year later and turned out to be one of Hawthorn's great players. He later served as an assistant to John Kennedy at the Hawks and was elected to the club's board for the 1971 season. In his time there he coached one game for the Hawthorn seniors in Round 9, 1973 - a loss to Fitzroy. Also Reserves coach 1972 and 1973.

He returned to Melbourne alongside Bob Skilton as an Assistant and Reserves coach between 1974 and 1976. South Melbourne held Skilton's clearance to coach up, and Simmonds was the backup plan to take charge of the senior side if required.

Also shown as from Koondrook in some sources. In 1986, Simmonds says he played two practice matches and left when he wasn't seriously looked at.
