On the day Dermott Brereton made his debut for the Swans, his new side fought back from 28 points down in the third quarter to win their second in a row against Melbourne, and avoid a loss in Melbourne for the first time since they drew with the Demons in 1992.
It was even more impressive considering that they'd lost by 94 points the week before, but Melbourne's promising start to the season had fallen away badly. While he had a quiet day overall Brereton was one of the keys to the victory, kicking the goal which put the Swans in front 24 minutes into the last quarter. They scored another soon after.
With the aid of a strong breeze Melbourne had opened up a three goal at the first change, and still held a one goal lead at half time. They had extended the margin to 28 points in the last quarter before Sydney kicked four goals in six minutes. They hit the front before before Allen Jakovich snatched the lead back, but then Brereton kicked his goal and the Swans won.
It was Melbourne's third straight loss after starting the season with five wins in a row, and their second in a row by under 10 points. It was Sydney's third win in two years - two of which were now against Melbourne.
Neale Balme said: "The wheels have fallen off and we've got to go and put them back on."
Best were Lyon, Schwarz and Tingay.
