Without a win since their opening game, the Demons faced the reigning premiers, desperately needing a win to get their season back on track but failed miserably. The Hawthorn cheersquad piled on the misery before the first bounce with a banner reminding Melbourne of the 1987 Preliminary Final and 1988 Grand Final results.

After seven straight losses, few expected the visitors to trouble Hawthorn but they were competitive for two quarters of a scrambling, uninspiring game. The Demons led by seven points early in the second quarter before Hawthorn grabbed the lead back. Jim Stynes had been one of his side's best early, but positional moves negated his impact after the break.

The Hawks started the third quarter 14 points ahead, kicked three early goals, and added 12 to three in the second half. Melbourne players struggled to find targets, regularly missing teammates by both hand and foot.

All three of Melbourne's second half goals were kicked by defender Graeme Yeats who had gone forward after earlier being dragged for poor play in the back line.

Best were Lovell, Stynes and Healy. Pickering suffered a bruised foot and Goodwin a bruised hand.

John Northey said "I thought we were travelling quite well, but the second quarter was pretty disappointing". The loss left his side above only the Brisbane Bears on percentage.
