John Northey would coach the Demons nearly 20 years later, but on this Saturday at the MCG he would destroy them, with eight goals from a half-forward flank.

Melbourne had won two in a row to get their season back on track, but ran into a red hot Richmond outfit and never got much closer than they were at the opening bounce. Northey kicked four goals in the second term, had twelve shots for the day and played a part in several other goals throughout the match.

Two goals to open the last quarter gave the Demons some hope of a stirring comeback, but Richmond returned five of their own to run out comfortable winners.

Best were Mann, Groom and Hardeman. Walker (knee) and Parke (flu) were replaced in the selected side by Schwarz and Roet respectively. Feldmann (cheek) was replaced by Jones and quarter time and Townsend by Downing in the last quarter.
