Entering time-on of the third quarter the Demons were ten points behind South, but four quick goals gave them a fifteen point breather at the last change. After that they were never headed.
The third quarter had been another story, with the lead changing hands six times. In the last quarter, though, the luck was all going Melbourne's way. South ruckman Russell Cook was swung off balance trying a clearing kick and actually booted the ball 30m closer to the Demons goal.
Hassa Mann was a deserved best-on-ground, with 7.1 and a dominant performance. He'd been selected as a centre but instead played as a rover. The Age described his game as one which "won many kicks around the packs, opened up the way for team-mates with intelligent handball and on the forward line made excellent position to either take a pass himself or direct one to another Melbourne player". He was given a standing ovation when he left the field late in the match with a strained knee. His tally was even more impressive given that he’d been set to tag Bob Skilton. Unbeknownst to Mann, Skilton had also been given the job of tagging him.
Best were Mann, Adrian Bowden and Graham Osborne. Quinn and Mann were replaced by Stewart and Hardeman respectively during the last quarter
