The defending premiers didn't have it all their own way against Melbourne, but even a spate of injuries couldn't stop them eventually winning comfortably.
Fitzroy kicked six of the ten goals in the first quarter, before booting five to one in the second to open up a match winning lead. The Demons won both the third and fourth quarters, but not by enough to get within three goals and they missed numerous chances on goal throughout the day with Fanning the chief offender.
The loss dropped Melbourne to eighth.
