The Demons had already gotten revenge for the Preliminary Final loss to the Hawks by beating them a week earlier, and now they had a chance to consolidate their place at the top of the ladder with a win over the Lions. They had to do it without the suspended Rod Grinter or the injured Garry Lyon, Danny Hughes and Warren Dean.

In a game where pressure ruled over skill the Lions had either led or stuck with the Demons all day but in the opening seven minutes of the last term Melbourne booted four goals to open up a winning break. Ricky Jackson kicked three of his goals in the last time.

Down the other end Paul Roos, playing full forward for the Lions, was handily beaten by Sean Wight and his own teammates who couldn't deliver to him well enough.

Also in front of Roos was Steve O'Dwyer who took 11 marks, mostly drifting across half back in a best on ground performance. The other best players were Wight and Jackson. Greg Healy suffered a depressed fracture of the cheekbone and was forced to undergo surgery.
