Having battled their way back into the four, and into contention for 2nd place, the Demons avoided any surprises against the bottom of the table Saints - thanks again to a massive haul by full forward Fred Fanning who took his total to 41 goals from the last five matches.

Melbourne got off to a bright start, but it was the second quarter where they kicked away to an almost unbeatable lead over over eight goals. St Kilda did well to stem the damage from there but they were still comfortably beaten.

Lock, McGrath and Fanning were best.

The victory put Melbourne in front of Footscray in second place. It was St Kilda's lowest score against Melbourne for 20 years.
