On a wet day the Redlegs had few winners, and were badly beaten after a promising first quarter. Both sides were missing state players, but Melbourne was worse hit with the loss of Ogden, Tymms and Vine from their backline.

With the use of the breeze, Melbourne scored the first four goals of the game without reply, including two to Margitich and another that he set up for Vanthoff. Carlton then steadied, taking a goal off the lead by the change of ends. The Redlegs then fell off a cliff attacking into the wind, Carlton kicked 6.9 to nothing and opened a 27 point lead.

Melbourne's last chance was a big quarter with the wind after half time but they barely cut into the gap, too slow to dispose of the ball and beaten at the contest. They conceded six goals to one in the final term, suffering their biggest loss since 1920.

Long, Esposito and Davidson were best. 19th man was MacDonald.

Umpire Scott was forced to hobble through most of the game after hurting his ankle late in the first quarter.
