Played just two days after the Reds loss against South Melbourne, the King's Birthday clash gave them a chance to earn some respect against fellow strugglers Richmond but they failed the test and wound up kept off the bottom only by the moribund University.

An injury depleted Melbourne started well but fell apart in the second half and were beaten with relative ease.

Evans and Millhouse were best. In the absence of both captain and vice captain, Millhouse captained the side.
