Played just two days after the Reds loss against South Melbourne, the King's Birthday clash gave them a chance to earn some respect against fellow strugglers Richmond. They failed the test and were only kept off the bottom by the moribund University.
An injury depleted Melbourne opened a five goal lead but fell apart in the second half and were beaten with relative ease. The gap closed to a point at three quarter time but the visitors held on until the last quarter before collapsing.
Evans and Millhouse were best. In the absence of both captain and vice captain, Millhouse captained the side.
