The Redlegs suffered an 18th straight defeat against Collingwood, leaving them marooned at the foot of the ladder without a win after seven games.
Despite the loss it was a much improved performance by Melbourne, kicking their highest ever score to date at Victoria Park. Only once had they ever performed better against the Magpies, but given that they'd lost 29 of 31 matches against them since 1897 the achievement was somewhat lessened.
The visitors were better in general play, and they had seven more scoring shots, but Collingwood's accuracy helped them take their chances and kick a winning score. By quarter time the Pies already had seven goals on the board, before the game tightened up at the start of the second quarter. Both sides only managed points, including seven in a row to Melbourne, before the Reds finally broke through. They added four goals for the quarter to a point, repelling a last minute Collingwood rush to take a two point lead into the last term.
Two quick goals at the start of the third were the first of nine straight across the second half for Collingwood, and they immediately had Melbourne on the run. Melbourne revived late, and had the better of the play again but were unable to break through Collingwood's defence until a Margitich goal on the bell cut the gap to 13.
The margin was as close as six early in the last quarter, before Collingwood steadied. A lucky goal off the ground extended the margin to three straight kicks and they were home. One of the key moves was the switch of future Demon Billy Libbs onto wingman Percy Beames, quietening him after a star first three quarters.
Best were Beames, Adams and Margitich. 19th man was Jackson. Bill Vanthoff was originally named 19th man but was promoted to the starting lineup as a late replacement for Robert Johnson (boils).
