Melbourne were winless, rooted to the bottom of ladder and had just handed St Kilda their third win in six seasons, while Carlton were riding high on top of the table but a bruising encounter with Fitzroy just two days before took its toll on the Blues.

They were missing two of their ruck division and a key forward, and it showed as they laboured to their lowest ever score at the MCG. They would not score one goal in a game again until Round 11, 1991, and the combined tallies of the sides in the second term remains the lowest total score for that quarter in VFL/AFL history.

The sure ball handling which had helped deliver them victory two days earlier deserted the Blues, and in greasy conditions they never got going. Melbourne, on the other hand, played to the conditions perfectly and kicked the ball along the ground when required.

Best were Strong, Bremner and McClelland.
