The Demons run of outs at Kardinia Park stretched back to 1988, and even their improved 2000 form couldn't help them get over the line. It didn't help that they went goalless for 49 straight minutes, from 13 minutes into the second quarter, when they led by 16 points to when the Cats had hit the lead by 15 in the third. The second quarter goal had been a Jeff Farmer special, snapped from the pocket after beating two opponents, but save for a poor miss from David Schwarz not long afterwards it was the last anybody saw of the Demon forward line for nearly an hour.

By the last change Geelong had opened up a lead of 34 points and the match was over. The margin blew out to a game high 49 before the Demons stormed home with five straight goals to close the gap to 15 before the Cats steadied with two of their own. Once again Demons players and fans were forced to travel back up the highway empty handed for yet another year.

Shane Woewodin, Guy Rigoni and Steven Febey were best

Neale Daniher said "It was probably in the third quarter that we lost it. I was happy with the way we fought it out, but at the end of the day they were too good for us."
