The high scoring Demons finally slowed down a little bit in their clash with the defending premiers, but they were still comfortable winners. For the second week in a row they were helped by young Darren Cuthbertson who beat four opponents, including Denis Banks twice, on route to his second straight seven goal haul and also managed to pull in a "mark of the day" screamer.

Four of Cuthbertson's goals came in the second quarter, keeping Melbourne within two points at half time. Collingwood's first quarter inaccuracy hurt them, when a wind sprung up in the third quarter it favoured the Demons and they kicked five goals to one.

First year player Kevin Dyson once again dominated the midfield and debutant Andrew Ford took to the task of tagging Tony Shaw with aplomb. Leigh Matthews was forced to switch Shaw into the role of tagger himself in the second half to try and curb the influence of Todd Viney but he had little success.

Best were T. Viney, B. Lovett and Cuthbertson.

John Northey praised his players by saying: "They're putting a lot more thought into their game than they previously did."
