Melbourne had been winning without playing well and their run finally came to an end on a wet MCG against the visiting Bombers.

Essendon were more aggressive and handled the conditions better, and when Garry Foulds slipped on the ground unnoticed at the end of the first quarter to kick the first of his four goals it demoralised the Demons, and they conceded six in the second quarter to be 20 points behind at half time. The home side took until midway through the third quarter to challenge again when Brian Wilson got himself into the match.

The Demons got two goals from the new 50m penalty rule, though Greg Healy later admitted he milked contact to try to win the 50, and video replays of Darren Bewick conceding one to Garry Lyon proved the contact minimal.

Yeates, Hughes and Wilson were best. Brett Lovett was reported twice for striking but cleared.
