As Melbourne crashed to their sixth loss of the season the side's confidence sunk as low as it could go. The day had started poorly with Tony Dullard barely registering a point from the square with the first shot of the game, and didn't get much better from there on. They remained in touch until half time but atrocious kicking kept them taking advantage.

Bob Skilton said "We go out every week and play to the best of our ability. One week we will click". Unfortunately though the side spent four quarters making basic errors and turning the ball over.

Geelong's Paul Sarah, the smallest man on the ground, racked up 28 touches and kicked 7.1 as he taunted the Demons and his opponent Chris Graham. Larry Donohue added 8.3 of his own as the Demon backline was completely outclassed.

The Flower brothers were named as best on field, Tom in his first game, as well as Davis. Hutchison replaced Sullivan in the second quarter and Aitken by Carroll in the last quarter.

On the same day chairman John Mitchell was forced to deny claims that the club had approached Richmond's Kevin Sheedy with an offer to become captain-coach. He said the committee had "every confidence in coach Bob Skilton and will back him to the utmost".

Former player and coach Ian Ridley was also forced to deny that he was involved in a movement to unseat the current board. He said, "I don't have to express my loyalty to John Mitchell or Bob Skilton - they know they have it".
