The Demons added another two new players, but were unable to take the points against Footscray on their home patch, losing their spot inside the top four to the Tricolours in the process.
Melbourne fielded a weakened team, and put up a stirring fight. They started well, and after conceding a 17 point lead at half time ended up in front at three quarter time. Footscray then ran over the top, with the Demons only managing one point to end the game opposed to the home side's nine scoring shots for 3.6.
The visitors were further weakened when Kennedy suffered an ankle injury after they had already introduced their replacement player Conroy. They had to play with 17 until Kennedy could return, but all he could do was stand near the goalsquare where he managed to kick two goals.
Cordner, McLean and Porter were best. Conroy suffered an injured ankle and was replaced by Archibald during the second quarter. Kennedy also hurt his ankle.
