St. Kilda win by 7 points
After a disappointing start to the season the Reds needed to beat the Seasiders to avoid being all but eliminated from the season within the first two months but they fell narrowly short.
On a frosty day neither team was challenged by the wind, but found the going hard due to the damp conditions. Melbourne kicked the first goal, but congested play suited St Kilda better and they led by five points at the first change.
The Demons attacking strongly at the start of the second term, but four consecutive attacks were turned back, but on the fifth attempt they goalled and kicked four for the quarter to take a one point lead into half time.
After an even first half St Kilda ran away with a lead in the third quarter before Melbourne made a stirring comeback which almost snatched the game. They were 25 points down halfway through the quarter, but when Gibb kicked his third goal of the match deep in the last quarter the margin was back to six points and a remarkable comeback was on the cards. St Kilda held on, they took the ball to the other end for a point and followed with a goal to seal the match. It was only a late consolation from Niven that got his back to 10 points behind but time rant out on the Demons.
