After two wins in a row which saw them climb off the bottom of the ladder and back into finals contention the Redlegs travelled to a ground they had won at the year before and looked likely to repeat the dose for three quarters before falling in a hole in the last.

They had been lucky to lead at three quarter time after a haphazard display, with several players flying for the same ball and their kicking being inaccurate. It was not a day for quality football, with a strong north-westerly wind favouring one goal. Melbourne won the toss, and had the use of it in the first quarter. They put on 6.5 to 3.1, and while they failed to score in the second term the home side only got 3.10 to take a one goal lead into the half.

The wind strengthened before the third term started, but keeping Geelong goalless was only matched with three goals of their own and the Reds were vulnerable going into the final term. For the second time they failed to score into the wind and were overhauled by the home side.

Best were Taylor, Mollison and Harker.
