Despite having been poor all day Melbourne remained still within striking distance in the last quarter before a blistering ten minutes of football by the home side ran them off their feet.
Essendon's ruckmen had dominated the first half, and it was only poor kicking that kept Melbourne in the game so long and let them make a comeback in the third quarter - doubling their first half score in the third term alone. The Reds had the first goal of the game through Hugh Dunbar, but Essendon were quick to reply. From there the rest of the first half was a scramble.
With Essendon holding a 25 point lead at half time, the third quarter provided the best quality football of the day. First gamer Corby and Harold Dunbar broke through after several minutes of attacking. Deep into the last term the result was still in doubt but the exertions of the third quarter fightback had taken all the effort the Redlegs could muster and Essendon kicked 6.3.39 in the last eight minutes of the match to win comfortably.
Thomas, Streeter and Haines were Melbourne's best.
