The first and last of what was meant to be an annual series of ANZAC weekend games between the two clubs proved to be a nailbiting affair.
With Melbourne shooting for their fourth win in a row, after a season where they had won just five games, the Swans jumped to a handy lead early but by half-time were trailing after the Demons kicked eight goals in the second term.
A four goal to one third quarter put the Swans back in front before the Demons kicked six in the last quarter to win. David Neitz helped himself to six goals against an increasingly fragile looking Sydney backline.
Jeff White had 34 hitouts, and Adem Yze moved onto the wing in the last term. The surface, which had been criticised all season for its poor surface, claimed James McDonald with a knee injury. He would miss three weeks with the injury, but the break gave Daniher a chance to huddle his team and they kicked six goals from that point.
