When the Demons took a 17 point lead into half-time against the inaccurate Blues not even their own supporters could believe it, one in the outer heard was heard by a reporter from The Age preaching about how they "lead you along" and how "you just can't trust them to win". With the players going down the race at the break congratulating each other like they'd already won the match there was no doubt that the Blues were going to come back strongly in the second half.

It took until early in the last term for the Blues to hit the lead, but as soon as they did Mark Jackson booted one of his five for the day to wrest the advantage back again. It didn't take long though for the Blues to take control again and finally put the game away.

Barassi called it the "best 100 minutes of effort we've had" but couldn't hide his disappointment that his team had come so close to snatching a shock victory but hadn't managed to hold on.

Best were Jackson, Keenan and Healy. Jackson suffered a bruised thigh, Giles a bruised hand/strained abdominal muscles and Jarrott a strained hamstring.
