Desperate to score their first victory of the year after four straight losses, the Demons had the misfortune of running into a Hawthorn side led by the white-hot Peter Hudson. The Hawks spearhead carried his team to victory, banging through 16.1 to lead his side over the line. His sole behind was his last shot on goal of the day.
Melbourne had been given chances, Greg Parke at centre half-forward and Gary Hardeman on the half-forward flank had been strong all day but two missed shots on goal by Chris Aitken shortly before three-quarter time left them 19 points behind, knowing that every time they let the ball go inside defensive 50 they would have to contend with Hudson. The situation became so dire that forward Ross Dillon was thrown onto him in the third term.
It was too late. The Hawk rucks dominated in the last term and the home side ran away with the win. It was their biggest ever score against Melbourne. Hudson's performance was not only the most by a Hawk and the most at Glenferrie Oval but the most ever kicked in a game against Melbourne, eclipsing the 12 kicked by Fitzroy's Bob Merrick in 1919.
Best were Hardeman, Alves and Bourke. Parke (ill) was replaced by Rowlands in the last quarter. Osborne (ankle) was replaced by Vagg in the last quarter.
