Melbourne's fourth straight win strengthened their position for 1939. They battled through greasy conditions and a heavy ground to win courtesy of an advantage in the air and the ruck.

The Demons were slow off the mark, allowing Geelong 12 scoring shots in the first quarter, but the visitors made better use of their chances. They had the advantage of a slight breeze in the second quarter, and settled into the game. Driven by a star turn from Jack Mueller in the ruck they half time they led. Both sides split 10 goals in the third quarter, with the last to Barassi leaving the Demons with a two goal lead going into the final term.

Both teams kicked two goals in the last quarter. Melbourne got the first, with Mueller kicking a point, then intercepting the kick in for a goal. Geelong reduced the gap to 11 points and had two shots on goal but missed. Mueller dropped back into defence and took two vital marks, before his side kicked the sealing goal.

Mueller, Lock and O'Keefe were best. One of Mueller's three goals was said to have come from a 75-yard kick. Maher replaced an injured Roberts in the last quarter.
