Coming off a more encouraging performance against Richmond before the bye, Melbourne returned to the field only to be thrashed by a rampant Blues side.

Carlton led by less than a goal at the first change but slammed on 12 goals to two over the next two quarters to take an insurmountable lead against the disappointing, pieced together Fuschias.

Tonkin was Melbourne's best, and both Haines and McLean won praise.

At least despite the thrashing Melbourne fared better than Geelong who kicked 0.18 on the same day.
