The visitors held Geelong to two goals in the first quarter before being put to the sword by Cats forward Bruce Lindner. He kicked five in the second quarter alone, on the way to 7.8 for the match.
Having beaten the Cats in a mid-week night series semi final five days earlier, confidence was high, but Geelong had done their homework on that encounter. Melbourne wasn't able to execute any of the ball movement that won the game during the week.
31 touches and two goals to Greg Healy was the highlight of the day for the Dees. Johnson injured his leg.
