Two of the league's four winless sides came together, and in a thrilling finish Hawthorn broke their duck.

Not surprisingly, considering their positions on the ladder, the two teams put on a terrible exhibition of football where high marking and a close finish was the only thing to recommend it amongst four quarters of fumbling football.

Usher, Long and Pemberton were best. Margitich played a lone hand on the forward line but spoilt his day with poor kicking.

It was only Hawthorn's second win over Melbourne since joining the league in 1925, and to that date the Redlegs' lowest score against them.
