Melbourne got their season back on track with an easy win over the Maroons. The two teams had to deal with strong winds, and it made for a poor standard game with a number of missed shots on goal. Fitzroy matched their opponents in most departments, but were let down by their poor forward play.

The Redleg defence held firm in the face of attacks by Fitzroy, restricting them to two goals in the first half - by which time the lead was nearly four goals. A goal in the opening minute of the second quarter opened a 17 point gap. Fitzroy attacked, but after missing a pair of shots they conceded the next three goals, only getting their second of the game late in the quarter.

The visitors never threatened again. More wasted opportunities in the third saw the gap narrowly extended by the last change. Another goal to start the last quarter made Melbourne's win safe. They failed to pile on the misery and run away to a big win, but banked an important win to take their record to 2-1.

White, Davidson and Collins were best.
