First Goal
Stan Fairbairn

Neither side set out with their best team, with Melbourne missing Coutie, Brereton, Sykes and Hewitt sick or injured and Werner absent. They were dealt another blow when Robertson suffered a kick to the knee in the third quarter and had to retire from the game, then another after it was already lost when Mitchell went off with a sore leg in the last quarter.

Melbourne were the better side early on courtesy of a run of free kicks, and Fairbairn opened the scoring from half-forward but another attack soon after was blocked and they didn't manage another score for the term. They were improved during the second quarter, forcing Carlton to improve the vigour of their play to compensate.

The third quarter was evenly contested, but with Carlton having a 16 point lead they were proving too good. Melbourne were much better than their form of the first two weeks of the year but they were still the inferior side. When they lost Robertson from the wing they also lost any hope of victory and the Blues eased away in the last quarter.

Best were Pearce, Fitzpatrick and Odgers.
