After two straight losses to open the season Melbourne were not expected to trouble Geelong on their own turf, but they travelled to Corio Oval and earned a stirring victory. The home side started well but were outpaced from soon after until the end of the game.

Despite strong defence from Purse, Geelong got the first two goals of the match and held the Reds scoreless to take a lead into quarter time. Melbourne had no wind advantage in the second, but came back into the game quickly. Debutante Len Norman kicked his first goal, and his side got in front. Geelong fought back with late goals to get to half time with a one point lead.

With the visiting defenders holding Geelong's notoriously weak attackers at bay it was left to Melbourne to kick three goals to one in the third quarter - all from snap shots including one to Nolan which came from 60 yards out and rolled through an unguarded goal.

With the margin 16 at three quarter time Geelong started the final term vigorously, but a bad error by one of their players gifted Vin Coutie the sealing goal and Melbourne added six to their last change margin by the final bell.

Best were Norman, Purse and Pearce.
