The Demons clinched their first minor premiership since 1964 in dramatic circumstances, with the first after the siren kick for a winning goal in their history.

Playing for their own chance to finish top of the ladder, Geelong kicked the last eight goals of the second quarter, and the first after half time, to lead by 44 points. Two late goals by the visitors cut the lead at the last change to 32, before five in a row after the start of the fourth term reduced the margin to two points. There were no further goals until Max Gawn marked a Jake Lever kicked with 30 seconds left in the game, kicking the goal after the siren to win the game and leave Melbourne in first place at the end of the home and away season.

Best were Clayton Oliver, Max Gawn and Jake Lever. James Jordon was unused substitute.
