After having been top of the league just three weeks before, Melbourne had lost two in a row. The freefall continued with a loss at the hands of the 12th placed Blues at Princes Park. Melbourne had enjoyed a record-breaking 105 point win in their round 6 encounter, but on Carlton's traditional home they simply didn't look like a top 8 bound side.

The Demons still couldn't drop any lower than fifth, but they were now in grave danger of missing out on the double chance and being forced into a cut-throat elimination final.

Despite taking a lead into the first break Melbourne were wasteful. Neitz had 0.3 and was the chief culprit.

David Neitz had a miserable day, kicking 0.4 and leaving the game late with a leg injury.

Nathan Brown was the Demons best.
