After having been top of the league just three weeks before, Melbourne had lost two in a row. The freefall continued with a loss at the hands of the 12th placed Blues at Princes Park. Melbourne had enjoyed a record-breaking 105 point win in their round 6 encounter, but on Carlton's traditional home they simply didn't look like a top 8 bound side.
The Demons still couldn't drop any lower than fifth, but they were now in grave danger of missing out on the double chance and being forced into a cut-throat elimination final.
Despite taking a lead into the first break Melbourne were wasteful. David Neitz was the chief culprit with 0.3 Neitz had a miserable day, kicking 0.4 and leaving the game late with a leg injury. Colin Sylvia, playing his second game, goalled with his first kick in league football.
Best was Nathan Brown.
Neale Daniher aid "There's no doubt we flattened off and that's something we need to address. Our boys look very, very tired".
