In a week where Todd Viney announced his end-of-season retirement the Demons put in a limp performance against a Brisbane side who they had effectively swapped places with during the season. Their previous meeting at the MCG had seen Melbourne win by 95 points on route to a Preliminary Final while the Lions finished last.
In '99 Melbourne would avoid the bottom but were very ordinary - this was their 8th straight loss. Only during the second term did Melbourne look like they had regained some form. Against a Lions side trying to grab their 5th straight win they held a 17 point lead in the second term, but after a melee involving 20 players Brisbane sparked and kicked seven goals in 15 minutes.
A wasteful Melbourne had 33 more disposals but were still thrashed.
Best were Neitz, Leoncelli and Schwarz. Seven Demons were fined for their part in a melee - David Schwarz and Travis Johnstone ($2000 each), Matthew Bishop and Andrew Leoncelli ($1500) and Todd Viney, Daniel Ward and Guy Rigoni who paid $1000 each for their involvement.
